Alexandra Smart could easily be one of the busiest women in the Australian fashion industry.
In 2002 she created the Ginger & Smart fashion empire with her sister Genevieve which has grown from clothes into accessories, cosmetics and home wares. And she did it all while bringing up a young family.
We chatted to the mother of three about how she gets it all done and still manages to looklike she has it all together.
How has your attitude to health and beauty changed over the years?
I’ve always believed heath and beauty comes from within, and I still believe that. I have probably become more comfortable in my own skin over the years so my beauty regime has chilled a bit too.
How do you balance home life and work life?
When I’m at work I’m at work, when I’m at home I’m right there in mind and body. And I try where possible not to overlap otherwise it becomes messy and stressful.
What are your time-saving beauty tips?
Mornings are hectic in my home, so I like to keep the morning beauty program fast and easy. Sun cream is always must.
Where do you find inspiration for your collections?
Inspiration comes from everywhere; nature, architecture, music, art, overlaid with instinct for what our girl doesn’t know she wants yet…
What do you wish you could go back and tell your younger self?
Chill out and let the universe provide.
Do you have a big say in what your kids wear day to day?
My daughter has a great eclectic style – she manages to put great looks together without my influence … okay, maybe a bit of styling advice.
What is one fashion trend you would ban forever?
None really. Fashion is fun. The best fashion trend is find your own individual style.
And if you had to wear one outfit for the rest of you life, what would it be?
Slouchy leather pants, an interesting knit top, an effortless jacket.
You’re going on a first date/job interview/ dropping the kids at school- what do you recommend to wear in each situations?
First date: Something you feel amazing in – let your outfit illuminate you. And smile.
Job: Always dress up and wear an outfit that is appropriate for the industry. Never sloppy, always groomed. It’s better to overdress than underdress and not impress.
School drop offs: Slouchy relaxed pants, a soft tee, trainers.
