‘Nutella’. The word you’ve been saying wrong your whole life.

Every so often, something so unexpected happens, something so earth shattering, that it leaves our lives forever changed.

Today is that day.

It involves our beloved, adopted national treasure: Nutella.

Actually, I think it’s best if you sit down before you read any further.

Most of us have been pronouncing Nutella like so: Nut-ell-a which is exactly how it looks right?. WRONG.

According to Nutella, it’s pronounced New-tell-uh. And here’s proof from their own website:

Wait. What?

But, but … it’s made from HazelNUTs. Why would Nutella toy with us like this?

We can’t answer that, but our minds are officially blown. If you need us, we’ll be in the corner, rocking back and forth in the foetal position.

Here’s an official video, if you need more proof.

So, have you been saying wrong your entire life too?

Yep, what emmalee72 said but add Germany and other European countries to France. And the reason? Because in a lot of European languages the word for nut is something similar to Nuss, which is pronounced noos (like the ‘oo’ in good).
OK – flame comment now – why do American’s think the entire world revolves around them and their language?

This is how they advertise it here.

    Maybe “noo”, as in nutritious?

Ive always said it like they say its suppose to be said! Here I thought I was going to be corrected lol!

It’s because actually it’s an Italian word. Nutella is from an Italian company called Ferrero. So that’s just the way how we Italians call it! ;)

  • emmalee72

Because that’s how you say it in France ;) It’s the breakfast equivalent of red sauce in France, where it goes on everything. To be fair, it’s not really a “new” but a bit between “noo” and “new” and you stress the “Nu” bit rather than the “Tell” bit

Actually it is Italian not French. But the same thing applies. It is pronounced Noo – tell-ah in Italian. Yummy no matter how it is pronounced :)
